What firewall do you recommend? (one that's easy to use yet still secure)

The title basically says it all. I'm looking for a good firewall that is easy to setup and is very secure. Currently I'm using Guarddog. If you think this is good enough, just say so; otherwise, suggest what you recommend.

Guarddog isn't a firewall, it's a GUI front-end for iptables. The same goes for Guarddog alternatives such as Firestarter. If you want to tighten your firewall rules you should be able to do it with the GUI of your choice, really. If the resulting iptables setup you end-up with while using Guarddog is good enough for you, then there really isn't any reason for you to switch GUI.

You could test Guarddog for effectiveness.

Use CSF or APF firewall. its pretty easy to setup. You can find nice CSF/APF firewall installation tutorials here

If you're going to make suggestions such as this, at least take a minute to explain what exactly the OP stands to gain. I'm sure there's other more compelling reasons for your suggestion besides "it's pretty easy to setup".

Well pretty much everything that can be said has been said. I found Guarddog a little too stringent, by default "everything" was turned off, even http requests, lol. If you like it though, stick with it. I personally just use the firewall applet in my Mandriva Linux Control Center.

Hi Pikidalto,

If you are looking into firewalls, how about if you try OpenBSD PF (Packet Filtering) or IPCop. You can read more on OpenBSD PF at http://www.muine.org/~hoang/openpf.html or IPCop at www.ipcop.org.

I am using both now and I think they are fantastic...

But then again, it all depends on your needs and requirements lor....
