What are some other ways of identifying a PC on the internet other than an IP address

Hello,
Besides the unique IP address, what are some other common and typical ways of identifying a personal computer that browses the internet?
Thank you

To what end, in what situation? From a web browser? Then see here:

In other situations similar things will likely apply.

Yes, I primarily use a web-browser on my PC. Interesting website link you provided. It seems to check for unique or rare browser configurations. I guess that's one way to lose your anonymity is to use a highly customized web-browser configuration or rare web browser itself.
Hmm, if I wanted to blend in with John Q. Public I guess I should dump Linux altogether and go back to use Internet Explorer in a bone stock configuration on MS Winblows, ... (?!)..

It is things like the information shown there, combined with possibly logging into sites like this or having Flash cookies that can give people away when they're using TOR.

As an aside, a place I used to work one of my colleagues knew when I had been trying out the remote connection software by the website logs -- they contained non-existant Windows version or messages like "Hey Steve" in the user agent strings.

Not necessarily. In Linux you can control the banners your browser uses to inform websites of your configuration, you can make your system appear to be joe public even when it is not.

by the "finger-print"

the OS
the Browser
The Cookies
The installed FONTS
The installed browser plugins

open/closed ports
Your DNS
and so on

almost ALL!!!! of us are unique to about 1 in 1,000,000 ( to 1:10,000,000 )

this is the OTHER way that YOU!!! can be identified using TOR

just check your self
your Browser fingerprint -- from EFF
https://panopticlick.eff.org/

as i type this i am only 1:920,000

so only about 7600 people in the world ( 7 bil. population) could be me

Scarecrow2000 06-30-2015 01:07 AM

It doesnt matter how unique your fingerprint is if it is different every day ...

OK, but what is different? A different user agent? A different IP address? How do you communicate then? I recall messing with IRC then using TOR so that it wasn't so apparent where I was (I had changed country in the mean time) but since I had posted from a "real" IP address before it was wasted in some respects.
Sorry, what I mean is that if you wish to interact with the world through the internet you will leave information behind and some if it may be idetifiable from your IP address to your use of the word "though" (I think it's one of my many "tells"). What matters is who you are hiding from and what you want to do,

John VV 06-30-2015 03:39 PM

there is also the "typing" finger print
both google and microsoft have patents on identifying UNIQUE individuals on HOW they type

google has messed with the idea of using that AS your login credentials

on different forums you would NEED to "misspell" DIFFERENT words commonly
and use DIFFERENT timing between LETTERS IN A WORD
all of us make UNIQUE "typos" also
( "instal lthe " , "an dthis" -- that misplaced space is mine )

you would have to change those

OPSEC IS VERY HARD to do all the time and make ZERO mistakes

there is a reason to use a VANILLA "tails" or "tor-bundle"
or set up a "VANILLA" os on a VM

i KNOW i have a few VERY UNIQUE fonts installed

when the FONTS installed can be used to track you ...........

and I AM only a NORMAL amount of NORMAL everyday suspicious
and i DO NOT where a "tin foil hat" ( aluminum foil)

Scarecrow2000 06-30-2015 06:06 PM

Yes it is difficult. I dont think anyone mentioned, turn off webrtc in your web browser. It will tell tales, like your LAN ip address for one.
In firefox, media.peerconnection.enabled

You might like this:
https://panopticlick.eff.org/

It grabs all the info your browser sends out and compares it to other configuration to see how "unique" you are. Also lets you know what you're telling the world.
