Using mkpasswd with passwd

I have recently migrated off SCO Openserver onto RHEL3. We currently use password ageing on our RHEL3 so after 1 month the user is asked to change there password.

On SCO you used to be able to use an external password generator program to display a password while changing it.

Is it possible in Linux when your password ages that you can get mkpasswd to display a suggested password before you change it at login

You can just write a python, bash or expact wrapper script to do that

for example in python there is libary popen2() which gives you the input and output

or hack the passwd source

hope that helps

A wrapper script would deffinetly be the preferred option although when logging in and the password ageing how would I call this script rather than /bin/passwd
