Ubuntu Live CD document encryption / decryption

I want to run Ubuntu Live CD and create a text document, encrypt it, and save it to a thumb drive. This I can already do. However, how do I save and restore the encryption key that I created when I initially encrypted the document? Essentially I don't know how to decrypt the document since with each LiveCD session everything is "new" and my key doesn't exist.
