Would you please clarify what you mean by start stop iptables?

In Ubuntu, iptables runs automatically. You can effectively 'stop' it by issuing a flush command iptables -F which will clear out the rules. To 'start' it you can add rules to it.

There are also a couple of GUI front ends for it if you prefer. The default one in Ubuntu is UFW. See this link. I also have seen a lot of references to Firestarter, though I think it is a little more out dated. Here is a link to that.

In fedora iptables is a service which you can start/stop via:

service iptables start
service iptables stop
/etc/init.d/iptables start
/etc/init.d/iptables stop

appilu is asking if Ubuntu has something similar. However you are correct in your answer that it does not. Having all chains set as ACCEPT by default and flushing the firewall is essentially how you would 'disable' it.

p.s. - I really like fwbuilder for some reason.

thnks to Noway2 for a clear line on ubuntu firewalls.

I worked on different versions of fedora.there i feel very easy to maintain firewall;but in ubuntu it seems to be difficult.
Any good GUI's other than firestarter.
