Tracking login/logoff time on RHE 3

Hi I am running RHE 3 update 5. This box is connected to my internal network with programs which are used by users by logging through the internal network. I want to track the login and logoff time of users for better time management.

Need help on this query. I want to send the info to say a text file from where i will get the login and logoff times

thanks in advance

Hi,

I believe this is easily done by using the 'last' command. You can see the login and log-off times of all users (including root login as well as reboots). You might want a simple shell script that takes the relevant lines from the output of last and presenting it to you in an email.

There are also 1 line shell scripts that you can put into the .bash_profile of the users, to send an email whenever the user logs in.

Hope this helps.
