Unhappy spyware

Hi. I am a total newbie to Linux. I have installed Fedora 5 and would like to know a few things. What anti-spyware-adware programs do I need to install? How do install them or anything for that matter?? How do you defrag the drive? What about changing themes? The lst goes on!! I know nothing!! Can anybody please help. My drive is partitioned and I am also running windows xp which I do know a bit about! Thanks if you can help.

Welcome to LQ!

1) Don't worry about spyware - it isn't a problem on Linux. This is for various reasons that you can search the web for.

2) Again, don't worry about defrag. Linux filesystems do not suffer from fragmentation like FAT / NTFS does. This is because of the way files are allocated to the disk, etc. See Here for a good article on the subject.

3) To install programs, either use Yum on the command line, or use "Add / Remove Programs" in the menu. This will let you choose from literally thousands of programs, and will automatically download and install the program and any dependencies for you.

4) To change themes: I take it you are using Gnome (default on Fedora). Simply click System - Preferences - Themes, and select one to install. You can install new themes from www.gnome-look.org.

I hope this helps

http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc5.html

This is a link that you might find very usefull. It will show you how to install programs for one, but it will also show how to do some other cool things in relation to FC5. Things like getting mp3's to work and accessing your window's NTFS drive.
