Slackware 10.1 Permissions?!

Hi. I've been using Slackware 10.1 for about a year now and all has been fine.
Until I realised this:
When I create a file as root (and chmod 644 it) in a directory owned by an unpriveliged user, it is possible for the owner of the directory to delete or alter the file, even though the permissions say read-only! Is this right?
I planned to set up files in users' home directories (such as .profile and other settings) that could only be altered by root and not the user themself.
I have never noticed this before but could be quite problematic for me. Has anyone experienced this or know if it is normal behaviour? Otherwise could it be some Slackware specific bug? I haven't experienced it on any other distro, but then again I haven't used many others!

Thanks for reading

Hi,

This 'feature' works as designed (unlike unix).

You could take a look at chattr and lsattr. The first can set file attributes that even root cannot 'break' the second shows which attributes are set.

See man chattr/lsattr for details.

The manpage only speaks of ext2/3 filesystems, don't know if this will work if you have another (reiserfs, to name just one).

Hope this helps.
