simple security question about init script

Hi, I have a simple question about all the scripts located at

From my understand, all these scripts like Sxxxx will be run automaticaly when the machine is boot if the run level is in 5. But I found out that all scripts are in mode 777, which mean everyone in the system can modify them. If I am a regular user, I will modify this script to run something under root privilege.

Why it is like this? I am confused.

yes, sym links will have 777 for the permissions.

additionally, if you look at the /etc/init.d/ scripts, they are sometimes executable by all, it really doesn't make a difference, because the process have to be run as root, so youre fine. just make sure they are not writable by others.
