Set account lockout without using pam


Is there any way to set failed login attempts to lock the user without going through /etc/pam.d/*?

Yes...check the man page for passwd, I believe it's the "-l" option.

and i can set the account to lock itself after say 3 or 5 failed login attempts using passwd?

i think only pam can do this.

ok, thanks for the advice. i'll try to do a little more searching on the subject and if i find anything that might be useful i'll be sure to post it
