Sendmail authentication

I've been searching google for how to require authentication to send trrough a sendmail smtp server, but all I can find is how so add SSL.

Does anyone know how to do this?

I am not sure how dated it is, but this is the first link that I came up with. The authentication mechanism is called SASL (not SSL), though often times authentication is done over an encrypted mechanism such as TLS or SSL to prevent snooping of the authentication credentials.
