security testing environment

I've got 6 old machines that I was using as a cluster. I've recently become interested in Information Security/Network Security. These machines are all networked together, and are all running debian sarge. I know a little bit about networking, but I want to teach myself about security, and vulnerabilities and so forth. The hope would be to let my friends have access to this as well, but that would be later. Where should I start.

perhaps pick a security certification which you find challenging enough to suit your educational goals and then start studying the required material?? from what i've heard, the comptia security+ is a good one to start-off with:

mmm....I'm kind of looking for self study, w/ freely available resources. I'm in high school, and my resources are limited. What kind of stuff should I even be looking at?

well, you could download the security+ objectives and then use that as a guide for your googling, since the info is available all over the web for free...

I looked at that, and some of it made some sense to me. I guess what I'm looking for is a basic security tutorial right now, hardening linux. Then, once I get that down, I'll move on to more complicated stuff. I've read this tutorial. Other Suggestions?
