Question security confusion

Hi i hope someone has the time to answer this question.

my os is SuSE 7.2
my network contains novell netware server, a FreeBSD router and several
win98, win2000 and dos workstations. Also there will be a mail, a ftp and a
web server.

After I read through several guides and howtos concerning ipchains,
masquerading, proxies etc. I am now a little bit confused.

Can you please post your personal opinion concerning the most secured
system, like
just a proxy?
just ip filter systems?
commercial firewall systems?
where to put the web, mail and ftp server?
is a "dmz" usefull?

just write comments and ideas because I really need new ideas.
Thank all of you in advance. Looking forward to read your suggestions.

Just my 2cents worth:

Squid is an excellent proxy that cme with your distro. The caching feature is useful if you have the right hardware.

You can use "iptables" as opposed to ipchains for your firewall and such. I would recommend that it is installed on it's own box. If you read the docs that came with your distro you should be able to get it up and running in no time.

I am using SuSE 7.1 after trying many distros and find it to be the best, imho
