We're looking at upgrading the settwork, Badger Korporashun's online system for keeping track of all you 'oomans. It currently uses a reByte device to power an old pc configured as a RAID 5 array and backs up our pcs (they run a mix of Windoze 2000, XP and Linux). The downside is that we're running out of storage space on the server (we have files on you all) and it isn't secure. Can anyone out there suggest a suitable new system for us ? The requirements are:
1. It has to be simple to set up and operate (we badgers have small brains)
2. It must be inexpensive. (
http://www.eclipse-computers.com is our favoured source)
We're thinking along the lines of re-using an old pc again, possibly powered by a mini-ITX board, and a RAID array of 4 or 5 big discs. We'd like it to be able to back up our pcs either directly across the Settwork (wired 10/100 Mb, wireless 54g) and, possibly, remote pcs via the interweb if we can set up a VPN. Ideally one of you clever 'oomans will be able to recommend a Linux (or BSD) distro that incorporates all we need and is simple to set up...
