Secure Deletion Application

Can anyone recommend a Secure Deletion program please.
It must be able to securely delete:

single files
multiples files together(or directories)
free space

I have tried to install SecureDelete by THC but I get tons of errors, kernel related I think.

Any advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

I believe that 'wipe' is specifically for files.. where programs like 'shred' are geared more to the whole disk or partitions.

There are more programs than this, but these are the only two I have had any experience with (successfully).

By success I mean, as far as know, they install, booted up, and worked.. but I never verified details.. other than obvious ones like when 'shred' deletes a whole partition (including the fs).

Code:
~]$ apropos shred
shred (1) - overwrite a file to hide its contents, and optionally delete it
~]$ apropos wipe
bcwipe (1) - securely erase data from magnetic and solid-state memory

Until you verify results your experiences may seem successful but they really are not.

* BTW you still "owe" me a reply here thankyouverymuch.
