It all depends on what application you want to 'sandbox'. For some a simple chroot environment will be sufficient. MySQL can be sandboxed using
MySQL Sandbox, for Apache several suggestions are given on
this site. You could also set up
OpenVZ to have container based virtualization, sharing kernel and hardware.

I personally recently migrated to
ProxMox which provides what I need/want to keep our developers happy while I stay relaxed and in control.
