run level control

well... while i was updating my modutils and doing other various driver adjustments, i changed my runlevel to 2 so that i wouldn't get stuck if X couldn't start up.

after several hours of tweaking, i was finally ready to return things back to normal, and change the runlevel in my inittab file back to 3. unfortunately, in my haste, i apparently hit the wrong key and didn't notice. my computer now is stuck at runlevel 9, which, as many of you might know, does absolutely nothing. i can't log in to fix it. i have absolutely no idea how to get around this, and my rescue disk isn't working.

any ideas?

You mean somehow you've got the runaway level 9 prob.

I would get back into this box in the same way as if you couldn't login as root.

Put CD rom in drive.
Boot off the CD rom.
Mount the harddisk to the new read-only CD-rom file system and go in and edit the inittab file through the mount point.

Reboot.

Just an idea I haven't had to do this before except on a Solaris system.
