RHEL default max passwd length?

Sorry for what is really a newbie question, but I don't have quick access to a copy of RHEL 4 or 5.

For RHEL 4 ES and AS, what is the default maximum password length specified by /etc/pam.d/system-auth upon installation (i.e., the default as set by Red Hat)? Is it 13 characters? 24? What's the maximum supported by pam? Anyone know what the defaults are for RHEL 5?

The default is 256 characters for RHEL-4 do not know anything about RHEL-5 since it is still does not exist, however FC5 is the same as RHEL-4.
