RHEL 5 sssd won't start

I'm trying to run the command:
authconfig --enablesssd --enablesssdauth --updateall

and it dies. Unable to start the sssd service.
/var/log/messages says:
sssd: Cannot load configuration database

I can paste any additional info you need.

I can't even open sssd with the command:
service sssd start
Dies with the same error.

Any ideas?

You need to remember that sssd is only a caching system similar to nscd, you've specified to use it for authentication but you haven't configured/enabled an authentication system like kerberos or ldap. Authconfig won't tell you that you're missing bits, for all it knows you could have set up kerberos/ldap manually.
