red hat enterprise linux "ostrich effect"
we have a number of rhel 3 boxes running here at uni which were safety tested yesterday, and as a result of this testing (all I know about this is that they weren't allowed to turn off the machines themselves) we were unable to ssh or ping these machines from other machines, and the X server seemed to have died completely, preventing us from logging in locally.
I was just wondering how this was possible? It seems to be that the computers developed what we've called the "ostrich effect", whereby they buried their heads in the sand, and refused to acknowledge any inputs whatsoever. When I run uptime, I'm informed that the computers seem to have been rebooted at midnight... this all seems very strange to me. anyone got any ideas what may have happened? |
Sure sounds like they were not 'safely tested' if nothing works after the test.
I would have to know more about this 'test' to even take a guess at what is going on. Can you reboot the servers? Then at least you should be able to log on and check things out. At this point everything is a guess since you can't even log on. opps. I read your post and thought you wrote 'safely' ....I see now it was 'safety'. Sorry for any confusion. |
Who is doing this "safety testing"? If someone other than you is testing your computer, then ask THEM to fix it. If they can't or won't, then they are not allowed near your machines again......
Regardless of WHO did it, the first step is to know exactly WHAT was done.... |
the machines have all been rebooted and now seem to be working fine, although since I'm not root, I can't check the logs to see what was done.

I have moved this to Linux-Security as it seems that that may be what your problem is ....
