Hello, i am at school and a computer has red hat linux installed on it. We do not have a boot disc to boot from, and there is a password on it, is there any way to get around this without a boot cd?

Pressing "a" did not work to get into the recovery mode, if i press "p" is brings me to a password prompt, but i do not know that either.

where is the password? is it after startup? is it a bios password or grub/lilo password?

If it is a bios passwd (ie nothing loads) you can take the battery out on the mother board for 15 min and this will reset it.

If it is a grub passwd you are in tough shape. Not much you can do without a cd.

If it is just the normal redhat password, depending on the boot loader you are using: if grub, type 'e' when you have options to select the kernel version then hit the append option (not sure what letter 'a'??) on the line that says kernel bla bla.. at the end add a single space and then the number 1. (kernel ..xx..xx..label=/ 1) something like this. then hit enter and hit 'b' for boot. This will bring you into single user mode and you can just type: passwd root and change the root passwd. I can't remember the correct way to do this with lilo but I know it is possible.

yeah i can fix it now, i have the cd, i was just at school and had nothing to boot off of to wipe linux, and it was a grub password. thanks for your help anyways
