Question Question on opening up a port

Hi,
I'm setting up a DNS server. The server seems to work fine from the server itself. But when I try to use it on another server I cannot.
I narrowed it down (I think) to being a problem with port 53. If I try and telnet using port 53. I get connection refused. How do I open this port up?
I tried adding a file in /etc/xinetd.d using the same syntax as telnet but changing a few things for named. This did not work. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Firewall problem? Named stratup problem? Version? Could you please be more vague? Some one might actually get what you are trying to ask.

Right sorry about that.

Named problem. It starts up fine. However when I point my resolv.conf file (on another host (Client)) and try to run nslookup I get : No name server/service(s) responding. I can ping the DNS server from this client. I am using Red hat 7.2 and bind 9.1.3. I was thinking the problem was related to why I can't telnet using port 53, for example telnet cot-dns1 53. I get connection refused. I was thinking I need to open this port up. but not sure how.

Sounds like your firewall is probably blocking outside access to port 53 -- I would start by going over your firewall rules. A default install of Linux 7.2 uses ipchains, so check your rules by `/sbin/ipchains -L`
