Project on IDS

Hi all,

I have a very less idea on IDS . I have a neighbor who is doing a study in "security systems" . He want to do a project on IDS , which must be innovative and novel.

Please share your idea and comments on:

1. The area in which IDS is heading towards?

2. Any open source IDS websites available?

3. Is there anything we can do with using the iptables?

Sure. Lots. He just has to use his favourite search engine and search for the term "IDS".

String matching is available for some time now as are snort-to-netfilter conversion scripts. If he wants slow then string match is what he's looking for.
