printer authentication??
HI
Can anybody help me find out if it is possible for me set up my printer(hp LaserJet 1320 series) on Ubuntu 5.10 so that every user on the network has to provide username and password to access it and also the printed out pages should have the username printed in the header or footer. Do Samba or CUPS have this option or I have to look for some other utility.
Thanx in Advance
Rajesh

Samba can easily handle the authentication for you. I would also imagine it would be possible to point it to a script that modifies the print jobs, so long as the incoming print jobs are in plain postscript.

A quick google I found that changing /etc/cups/cups.conf by commenting out the AuthType None and adding the others should do it.
## Anonymous access (default)
#AuthType None
## Require a username and password (Basic authentication)
AuthType Basic
AuthClass User
I think you need to create user accounts on the machine for them to print then.

I guess the most important question is finding out who the clients are: Windows? Linux? Mixed environment?

The environment is mixed mode i.e. Ubuntu 5.10 and windows Xp both are accessing the printer.
Previously I had set up the printer with windows Xp box and it took the printjobs without authentication.
I wanted that authentication should be there so that printer shoudnt be used irresponsibly, thats y I Installed Ubuntu on the desktop.
Ok I got the point that Samba and CUPS can do the authentication thing. Everything is clear till now, but only thing now I want that is there any script required to print the footer of every print with the username sending the job.
Any suggestions will be helpful.
Thanx in advance
Rajesh
