Ports

Hi all,

Im new here so ill make it known that im a total newbie to linux..

My question is,

I have redhat 9.0 installed on my old pc, an AMD Athlon XP 1700 + with 512mb ram, and 10gb disk..

I have http, https, ssh, telnet, and ftp all running fine, on these ports:

Port State Service
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
23/tcp open telnet
26/tcp open unknown <--http
111/tcp open sunrpc
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
443/tcp open https
6000/tcp open X11

These ports, are ports i dont understand.. Can i close these? or are they needed:

111/tcp open sunrpc
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
6000/tcp open X11

Any help is appreciated, and any easy to follow instructions for a complete beginner arre very much appreciated!!

EDIT:: in addition to that, how do i change the port that vsftpd listens on? it came with redhat..

The Simply Linux site has a good section on shutting down uneeded services (Chapter 7). Just be aware that the site hosting Simply Linux can be a pop-up hell. The information is first-rate however.

RPC (111) can be closed if you don't use services like NFS or NIS.
NetBIOS (139) can be closed if you don't connect to Windows machines.
X11 (6000) can be closed if you don't want to start X applications remotely

BTW: Telnet is not really needed anymore. SSH does the same and does not send plain text password over the net. You should remove telnetd completely.

And are you sure you need an ftp server on your linux box? ;-)
