POP3 Security

Well, Iwas packet sniffing earlier(d*rty bitch that I am), and was horrified to see my pop3 password sent out for all to see in plain text. Obvious really, but I'd never thought of it before. I contacted my ISP (BT Yahoo) to ask about encryption, and the poor monkey on the other end of the phone didn't have the faintest idea what I was talking about (even asked me what SSL was).

Although there's nothing very interesting about my mailbox, I'm pretty vexed about the fact
that any little sneak could access it without much effort...and everybody elses for that matter.

So I'm a little curious to find out what others do? Are there any good tricks, or is it simply a question of changing to a better ISP, or even setting up my own server? Or is it something people just live with? (As to be honest, I've never really heard much about this)?

By now I've got my own server..

There's not much that you can do if your ISP does not play along. My old one was unable to enable (he) SSL, but allowed SSH access for customers, so that I was able to tunnel my mail communication.

But I am curious to hear if other solutions exist.

Tks.
I decided to setup my own in the end - besides...IMAP seems way better than pop3.
