Phishing Email

While checking my email, I noticed a thank you for your order from Walmart. I have never ordered any thing from Walmart.

The order for a flat screen television seemed authentic, but the name and address was for someone in another state. I clicked the link for customer service. I noticed that I was connected to a server in Russia and then to a "google search" for Walmart.

I did a search for the name and address and found them to be fake.
I deleted the email.

My system is Fedora core 17. My internet connection is through a telephone modem.

My questions are: was it possible to put malware on my computer during that brief connection to the Russian server?

Was the email from a child learning to hack?

No rush.

Maybe, it's not enough info to tell. Is the email still in your trash folder? You could try opening it with a text editor instead of your mail client to see what it contains. You could google the site that the email took you to and see whether people have reported problems with it - do you remember what it was?

If you were using Fedora 17, it's extremely unlikely that the remote site would have been able to drop anything on your machine.

Malware that installs in such a way is almost always targeted to the Windows OS and won't run on Linux.
