permission denied while installing Java

Sorry for any problems with lack of information, I am new to Linux and don't know what you will need. To get to the point, I down loaded Java and extracted it onto my hard drive without any problems then had to end my session. When I logged in again and went to create a link to it I keep getting permission denied. The command I used is:

ln -s /home/kiphiggins/Desktop/Java/jre1.5.0_09/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

Any help to get me on the right track would be appreciated.

That's a very unlikely link.

What distro?
Where did you get the Java package?
What is the output of: $ ls /home/kiphiggins/Desktop/Java/jre1.5.0_09/

A note: This has nothing to do with Security ... the forum in which you posted it.
