Angry password problem on 9.2

Hi
I have mandrake Linux 9.2 on my new computer and when ever a try to open something it says:
You are attempting to run a command, which requires administrative privileges, but more information is needed in order to do so.
Password for root:

But I do not have a password and am the only one who uses the computer and I only got it yesterday.

During the installation process, you or whoever installed the operating system should have been asked to choose a "root" password. That is the administrative password they are referring to. So you will need to remember what you entered or contact whoever did the installation.

I'm guessing that you already tried leaving the password box blank and just hitting enter?

Try logging in as the user root with no password. If that doesn't work, you may need to reset the root password. Here is a HOWTO:

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/h...ml#resetrootpw

Btw, it is insane to have a system with no root password connected to the internet especially if you run any kind of services.

Does your system boot with LILO? If so, enter 'linux single' at the LILO prompt. Then do this command once you get the command prompt: passwd root. Enter your new password. Then do: init 5.

If you use grub you'll have to google. Anyway, google 'root password linux single' and you'll find all kinds of help.
