Password length in SuSE 8.0

Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to Linux SuSE and, after 8 years as a Windows user, I am in love with Linux!

A security question: I have passwords between 12 and 15 characters, but whenever I log in, I just have to type the first 8 characters and I'm in!
I edited my security settings, of course, and allowed a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 30 characters, but I can still log in with the first 8 characters.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

For anyone not using Yast: in every file in /etc/pam.d/, that has the line "password required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so <any other options>" add "md5" (w/o quotes) at the end. Now change your password for a longer one.

Thanks, rshaw and unSpawn for your quick help!

Checked the MD5 encryption box and everything is now working!
