PAM rejected by account configuration[12]

I am getting tripped up by this one. I age my users accounts out by chage -d0 <user>. I am hoping to age out the account and this should force the user to enter a new password when he tries to access the system via ssh on his next attempt. Instead what I am getting is a system disconnect after the user enters his original password. And my log is

PAM rejected by account configuration[12]: Authentication token is no longer valid; new one required.

What is my pea brain missing on this?

Seems handling rejects was commented out, sposed to be in around 3.6. For the time being couldn't you just do with setting -m -M limits and showing a warning they gotta change it in say 1 day or risk losing their account?

With the risk of sounding even less informed. Can you explain which 3.6 you are speaking about.
