noob question about pop/smtp and ssl


my isp doesn't support ssl. is there any other way i can protect my username/pass when i send or receive email from a client e.g. sylpheed-claws/mutt?

Without ssl the answer is probably no. If you are worried about password security in an environment that lacks secure connections, I would suggest changing your password fairly often and using complex passwords (no dictionary words).

You could also use an e-mail server not associated with your ISP, maybe find one that allows ssl connections. Unless you are emailing your checking account numbers I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Better yet, buy your own domain and host your own e-mail server (if you have broadband and they don't block ports 25 & 995).
