netstat: ipp listening, why?

I am fairly new at Linux so you might have to explain things. I am using SuSE 10.0 with a stand alone workstation. I am using the SuSEfirewall2. I don't need any services so I turned a lot of them off, but I notice that my DSL modem activity light flicks constantly. So I did a Netstat:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 *:ipp *:* LISTEN 6795/cupsd

If I turn off cups , the above port stops listening, but, I can't print to my local printer. All I want is to be able to use my printer without having that port open. Can you help?

Thanks

IPP is usually set to listen like that (it is a print service after all), but I believe SuSE's firewall is fairly strict and has that port filtered for unsolicited incoming traffic (unless you specifically told it to open the printing service). You can either verify that the port is firewalled or you can modify the cupsd.conf so that the CUPS daemon is listening for local connections only. The ideal way to verify that it's firewalled is to scan it from a remote machine. If you don't have any other systems, then try one of the online port scanning services offered by www.grc.com or http://scan.sygate.com/
