Question Need help in setting Permission............

Hi,
I want to set permissions to a folder as rwx-r-x-r-x in such a way that whenever a new file or folder is created under it, it will automatically inherit the parent folders default permissions.

So,what I need to do know, do I have to change the umask value??

Actually, the umask is attached to the user. Files don't inherit from parent dirs.
What exactly are you trying to achieve/ why do you think you need to do this?

Hello,

You can read this article to help you on your way: Linx and permissions. It's pretty complete and easy to follow.

Kind regards,

Eric

@chrism01, Actually I need this setting because random users from client system are uploading files using HTML form into that specific folder (which is situated inn the web server),
but they are getting "permission denied" error.

Hi,

Random users are uploading files and you want to give them execute permissions on a webserver? In my opinion a pretty BAD idea.

I'd look for a reason why they are getting the permission denied error instead of granting execute permission to random users. You'll find your server malfunctioning pretty fast I guess.

Check your logs to see if anything pops up there.

Kind regards,

Eric
