this leads me to think that it was an automated attack instead of a single hacker?
Likely both. There is an automated bruteforce attack currently being used rather heavily on the internet to identify machines with weak passwords. Usually the attack script will dump IP addresses and passwords of vulnerable machines to a file, which the cracker then will use to manually access and root later on. Though I'm sure there are probably fully automated versions (aka autorooters). For more information on the attack, see the thread near the top of the forum on "SSH login attempts"

knowing that it was more likely a random automated attack...

just out of curiosity which distro where you using when you got cracked?

You may also wish to use SELinux to harden your new OS.
