Mandriva firewall turned off

After a kernel update yesterday, the PC hung for a while during reboot and I so started reading the boot messages from which I noticed that the firewall wasnt starting.
After the system booted I went into my personal firewall settings and found it was set to "allow all (no firewall)".
I definitely did not set this up like this, so my question is could a package update have caused this or is it likely that my system has been hacked and the firewall turned off?
Is there a way I can tell from the system logs?

Edit: OK.Too many weird things happening. Root is denied access to a lot of stuff!!

I am going to format the hard-drive. I may as well take the opportunity to try a different distro!

OK - FWIW: a package update can do this, depending on how you run your firewall.
Root being denied access to stuff is not always strange, but if it is stuff root should have access to then that is a different matter. It sounds like the update got messed up - but then, I'd expect there to be other people complaining about it.

Have fun with your new distro.
