Mandrake 10.1 - Mountings

Hi all,

I am quite new to Linux still, and have weird problems (different - not related issues) :

1-
I have Mandrake 10.1 installed and it actually mounts all other partitions when it boots up; including my Flash Memory Stick. If I do a "ls -la" and look at my Memory Stick ("/mnt/removable") for instance, I can see that it mounted it as read/write for "user/group/other". Now my problem is that; if I switch to root, then umount /mnt/removable, and then mount it with : mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable, it mounts it as rwxr--r-- and even if I try and chmod 777 removable on that folder, or chmod o+wx removable and chmod g+wx removable; it stays as rwxr--r--. Why does this happen ?

2-
If I just logged into Mandrake 10.1 and go to a terminal and cd /mnt/removable and then do a "ls", there is nothing, but if I open the "shortcut to removable" icon on the desktop, all my files are there, and if I THEN go into the terminal and do a "ls" on removable, then everything is there.

I really hope someone can help me out here.

Thanks

Pieter Jacobs

1 - I think you can't change permissions because you are acessing a non-linux filesystem in which the permissions you see aren't reflected in the actual filesystem structure. Although you should be able to set it when you mount the partition with the umask flag of the mount command.

2 - Mandrake uses supermount so when it detects you are trying to use a unmounted mount point it trys to mount it. However it doesn't detect your shell access to /mnt/removable
