Angry locks on cdrom and floppy drives

I'm just getting started with linux and I installed Mandrake
7.2 on its own machine (no dual boot). My problem (among many others) is that I cannot access my cdrom and floppy drives. I get a message that I do not have permission and their is a padlock icon on the directories. I have added my username to the admin group and cdrom and floppy groups as well as selecting low security level in DrakeConf. Does anyone know how to get access to these drives and keep it?

log in as root and chmod them to 777

if the floppy drive is /dev/fd0 like on my machine then

"chmod 777 /dev/fd0"
my cd-r and dvd drives are /dev/hdc /dev/hdd

so i do

"chmod 777 /dev/hdc"
"chmod 777 /dev/hdd"

Re: chmod

Where do I go to do this? I'm only about two weeks into linux and I don't understand what chmod is or where to do it.

are u in kde if so do this:

press Alt + F2 and type in "Konsole" and press Enter

In konsole type "su" and type the password in for root

Now type "chmod 777 /dev/fd0" and press Enter

Now type "chmod 777 /dev/hdc" and press Enter

Now type "chmod 777 /dev/hdd" and press Enter

the hda means the primary master IDE
the hdb means the primary slave IDE
the hdc means the secondary master IDE
the hdd means the secondary slave IDE

therfore change the hdc & hdd to your CDrom drives respectivly
