Local user authentication fails when eth0 is up...

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie... I have already posted the same question on both 'networking' and 'newbie' forums, but wihtout much success unfortunately...

Here is the problem:
. My Linux workstation (see conf detail below) is successfully hooked to a LAN. It connects to the internet via an ADSL and through a firewall that has a *fixed IP*.
. The connection to the internet works perfectly well. In fact i am using it to type this message.
. **But**, as soon as, and as long as, eth0 is activated on my host, i can no longer login properly! I mean *local* login! Nothing to do with dhcp or ISP... Either the username/password verification fails --when performed from CTL-ALT-Fx consoles-- or it takes ages when performed from the current X session, say about 60 seconds.

Login goes back to normal behaviour when eth0 is deactivated.

Could this odd behaviour relate to authentication control / kerberos / ldap / pam.d / ipchains? My intuition is that the fact that the network/eth0 is enabled results in a change in the way the local username/password verification is performed.

Many thanks in advance.

Eric

PS. Some details about my machine:
CPU: PIII i686 1GHz
NIC: Netgear FA311 (it works perfectly fine, i can http, ssh, etc.)
Distro/Linux: Redhat 7.1 / 2.4.9-12
Static IP

Hi,

Supply some more info please.
Like when you say not able to login.

To which service, sshd, telnet or CDE or Gnome ? etc etc
How many network cards do you use ?
Does your firewall script allow interface -lo full access from the internal network interface ?

/Raz
