Linux file system collapsed but disk is fine, possible case of a hack

As I have explained here. My ubuntu partitions have been corrupted but my windows partitions are as perfect as they should be. Through various HDD tests, (mostly SMART tests through smartctl), the HDD is found to be perfectly fine. The good folks in LinuxQueustions suggested that it might be a possible case of a hack.
So, before I format those partitions and reinstall Ubuntu. I wanted to know the actual cause and measures to avoid it in the near future (since, I cannot recover the partitions) if it really is a hack

I'd try using another super block before re formatting it.

Why on earth would someone hack your computer just to corrupt the file system? I suppose a mindless script kiddie might but that seems unlikely.

SMART tests are not 100% reliable.

Getting hacked is more exciting, but I don't see any evidence that it happened in this case. Disk corruption that just happened to occur on the Linux part of the disk seems much more likely. I hope you've made backups, because the rest of the disk is likely to fail soon...
