Linux as firewall / gateway + using ADSL

Hi

being new to the Linux world I was wondering the following:

I have an old machine which I would like to setup SUSE (or any other suggested)on to it. Primarily as a firewall where my other machine..(win200, sorry!) will use the SUSE machine as a gateway. Could anyone point me to a tutorial or information regarding setting up a very minimal install so that I can do this ? The main reason why I wan t this si to learn Linux, and have the safety when going online using a premanent connection.

does this make sense.. I am playing around with iptables etc but I am still very much a beginner

regards
Gianni

Yes, it does.

You will also need to do IP forwarding and Masquerading.
SuSe has GUI tools to help you setup your network.

If you want an easy way to setup a firewall. Try Firestarter:

Firestarter
http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/

Shorewall

Thanks very much. I have KDE at the moment so I'll take a look at the other product and it seems firestarter rquires GNOME.

thanks again!
