kernel arguments from remote pc
 

I heard that we can pass options at boot time to the kernel and gain root access,if no boot loader password is set,by giving the argument 'single'.

How to do this from a comp X to a comp Y, given that

Y runs an ftp server with both anonymous and user logins.(its password is not known)
Y also runs ssh.
X and Y both run on linux.

Generally speaking even if you add the kernel argument to the bootloader and managed to reboot the machine you still won't be able to access single user mode remotely. Because by default in single user mode no network devicse or services will be loaded. Besides, you need root access to change bootloader configuration anyway.
