John the Ripper help

Alright so I am trying to run Johnny on my server to see how it runs against my machine but I ran into a problem. I am trying to unshadow the hashes, "./unshadow passwd shadow >unshadowed"
when i run this command I get this error, "fgets: Is a directory" If I run the unshadow command without the shadow file it runs but no hashes are stored in the unshadowed file because I guess I don't have any hashes to unshadow in the passwd file and the shadow file is where they are all at.

-I have copied the files into my run dir

cp /etc/passwd .
cp /etc/shadow .
Thanks for any help you can offer.

We don't normally close threads unless necessary. Why don't you post your solution, maybe someone with the same problem might find it helpful.
