Is portmap needed?

Is portmap needed?

If not, how can I remove it?
# netstat -lntp
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN xxxx/portmap

What services are you running on your machine? Portmap (or rpcbind) is needed for NFS (at least that's the only usage I know)

To disable it:

# service portmap stop

And, yes, if you're using NFS (as a client or server) then leave it turned on. See the portmap(8) manpages for details on securing it.
