IPTABLES rules not saving on reboot

Whenever I set some rules for IPTABLES and then reboot the rules have disappeared. I think I'm missing something obvious here, because I recall reading something about a save command being necessary, but I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance for your help and dealing with such a dumb question.

why don't you try iptables-save
you have to save it to a file normaly
/etc/sysconfig/iptables
or
/var/lock/subsys/iptables
or look at
