Unhappy iptables and vpn

Hello Fellow Linux Nerds,

I have a problem with my Linux router and my work VPN.

My Linux router has been running great now for about 8 months. My first experience was using ipchains. Now I'm at 2.4 and using iptables. I can successfully open and secure ports. I can forward packets from my router to other machines using NAT. I feel I have a pretty good grasp at this router thing.

My problem is when I try to connect to my work VPN from a machine inside my network, it always times out. My IT department told be to open certain ports in my firewall. I did that, but no luck. I even tried openning every port, and I still can't connect. If I plug my Internet connection directly to my computer, I can connect to the VPN with no problem. Other people at work use these Linksys Cable/DSL router/firewalls, and they can connect to the VPN using a machine behind their firewall. I don't want to revert to Linksys.

Does anyone have any idea? Does it have to do with NAT?

Thanks for any help!
