My tests were done without online validation (I have disabled OCSP), so I would say that discards it as the cause. That said, I'm still getting the invalid certificate alert, and scanning the certificate using this service yields this:

You can fix this by following VeriSign's Certificate Installation Instructions for your server platform. Pay attention to the parts about Intermediate certificates.
...which is in line with the symptoms described by the OP.
