In this country ISPs are required by law to keep all metadata for (last I looked) a minimum of two years. But it's all a joke anyway - even supposedly secure data from the government supplied COVID-19 app has been acquired by the cyber-spooks from the beginning. Of course they reckon they haven't decrypted any of it ... yet.

That makes me feel all warm and gooey inside ...

Websites tend to be hosted with virtual hosting now, so your ISP probably still can't pinpoint exactly which site you're visiting.

ESNI is also important, and depends on whether your browser supports it and the website you're visiting supports it.

There is an advantage in using a VPN homed outside of your home country, preferably a free one run as a sideline to the main business. Browser based ones from the vendor come to mind. (I loved that Opera had/has a built in VPN, and is owned outside the USA, but it became rediculously unreliable and never did true encryption.)

There is an excellent article here https://privacysniffs.com/vpn/browse...-built-in-vpn/ that gives some serious consideration and suggestions.
