how to know if the traffic via IPSEC tunnel is encrypted and tunnel working


Hi all,

i created ipsec tunnel between my hardware firewall and linux machine with openswan, its working fine,

now i just want to know that the traffic via created tunnel is being encrypted and tunnel actually working.

please let me know how to do it is there any tool to check, i heared of tcp dump but i don't know how to use if tof this task.

You want another computer attached to the network between these machines and use tcpdump to examine the network traffic. Use test traffic that would otherwise be plaintext (e.g. chargen).

How is your network laid out? You might need to restructure it so you can attach another computer in between, then route your traffic to that computer. Sniff traffic on that computer, and you should not be able to ready the traffic.
