HI

how to allow users to change their password in chrooted ssh as long as the modifications in the shadow file in the chrooted environment will not be applied on the system itself ?

What about running local NIS and any change will go to the NIS server (in the real root), which has access to the real shadow file. Or ask them to use ssh-keys instead a passwords.
